I simply love the way Peter Jackson is addressing social media this time around! No more ultra secrecy. In a way I miss posting juicy new photos or info on the production all the time but with Jackson doing all this extra work for us - the viewers - it is well worth it. Still trying to get my sources to cough something up though; it is much more a challenge when the director is so forthright. It's a good thing in my books.
In fact the photo reflects how much fun Jackson is having with this production - and rightly so. He has earned it all. The pic has Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel brandishing an array of fearsome Elvish weapons!! (or so says Jackson LOL)
Jackson has agreed to answer 20 fan questions to do with THE HOBBIT movies. He has also committed to reading all of the ~4000 questions thus far to find the most interesting ones! Amazing he has the time. Perhaps one of his assistants is well, assisting.
So read on! Here is what he gave us on his facebook page:
Right, time to start answering the 20 questions. So here goes...
STEVEN BEDDOE asked, "Will you have time to sift through 4,000 questions just to answer twenty of them?"
Yes, I will. I've been very busy recently, not just with shooting, but with location scouting and prep work during our days off, so I've found it hard to get to the questions. However, today I have enjoyed sitting down and reading through them all. I'll get started and continue to answer what seem to be the most popular questions during the next few weeks (as well as some one-off, quirky ones!).
Actually, that question was just a little dull (sorry Steven), so I'm not going to include it in the official twenty...
OFFICIAL QUESTION #1
VALERIA KEMENTARI asked, "Are we going to see the White Council attacking Dol Guldor?"
This was quite a popular topic, with JOHN LIDDLE, TOBY PHILLIPS and SETH DONALD, along with many others, asking variations of this same question.
I'm not going to say just what and when, but I will confirm that both the White Council and Dol Guldur will feature in the movies. And not just in one scene either. Just how to visualise it has been a challenge, but fortunately Alan Lee and John Howe went crazy with ideas, and it should look pretty cool.
In fact to celebrate the start of these 20 questions, I'll show you an exclusive photo of the White Council planning the attack on Dol Guldur! Even if you don't want to be hit with spoilers, you should still take a look.
Another question soon...
Keep up the stellar work Peter!! For ALL of our HOBBIT coverage, click here. More when I get it...

Very cool news for autostereoscopic (glasses free) 3D fans! My friends at MasterImage 3D are rapidly advancing in this arena and have yet another announcement in the field. I have personally seen their new Cell-Matrix tech (at Cinemacon 2011) and it looks AMAZING.
Here's the official press release (emphasis is mine):
MasterImage 3D’s Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier display provides developers a powerful environment to create their next-generation Autostereoscopic 3D content
Taipei, Taiwan (May 30, 2011) – MasterImage 3D today announced the availability of its new CELL reference tablet, giving developers and designers access to MasterImage 3D’s patented Cell-Matrix Parallax Barrier technology. The CELL tablet is based on PandaBoard—the OMAP4430 applications processor-based mobile software development platform. MasterImage 3D leverages the OMAP™ 4 platform technology from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) to add cutting-edge features to its popular Autostereoscopic “glasses free” 3D display. A demonstration of the new CELL reference tablet will be hosted by MasterImage 3D at their booth at Computex Taipei 2011, Hall 3 booths G766/G768.
"The depth and breadth of TI’s expertise will enable MasterImage 3D to deliver the industry's most innovative AS3D solutions," said Roy Taylor Executive Vice President and General Manager of MasterImage 3D Display. "By integrating the OMAP 4 platform-based PandaBoard into our next-generation systems, we can provide high performance development platforms for the most demanding developers."
Consumer electronics leaders are aggressively including AS3D in new devices to enhance user-experience, allowing them to view user-generated images and video, 3D movies, games, apps and eye-popping user-interface design. MasterImage 3D is the fastest growing stereo 3D company in the world with a successful 3D cinema business including over 3,000 3D digital cinema system installations in over 60 countries. Its display business is about to power dozens of new smartphone, tablet, car and aircraft display design wins.
The MasterImage 3D mobile display is based its patented cell-matrix parallax barrier, which uses a ‘cell gap’ approach to let users switch easily between landscape and portrait modes and between 3D and 2D functions. As more polarized light passes through, images are brighter and ‘ghosting’ is reduced so it allows for the sharpest quality across all content categories (video, games, apps, user-interface, photos). The MasterImage 3D technology works with any kind of display, from TFT to OLED, PDP and more, and the company’s patented manufacturing process for its 3D displays delivers an extremely high production yield while keeping costs low.
"TI is pleased to work with MasterImage 3D, whose visionary commitment to the user-experience has inspired new uses for glasses-free stereo 3D technology," said Fred Cohen, director, OMAP wireless ecosystem, TI. "With the broadest portfolio of maximum performance SOC solutions, we can provide all the pieces and advanced features required for exciting new AS3D consumer products."
MasterImage 3D’s CELL reference tablet is currently available in 4.3” and 7.0” with 10.1” coming this summer. Contact the company directly on how to gain more information. Visit MasterImage 3D’s booth to see glasses-free mobile 3D of some of the latest summer’s big 3D blockbusters, AAA 3D games, video from 3D studio, Digital Revolution Studios and 3D UI from Rigthware.

Man, these movies can't come soon enough! Seems like it has taken forever since we broke the news that Jackson is back directing and that they will be in native S3D, but we are almost there.
Here is the official press release (emphasis is mine - photo is not official):
“THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY” AND “THE HOBBIT: THERE AND BACK AGAIN” ARE ANNOUNCED AS TITLES OF PETER JACKSON’S EPIC TWO-FILM ADAPTATION OF J.R.R. TOLKIEN’S TIMELESS CLASSIC THE HOBBIT
First film slated to open on December 14, 2012 and second film to be released on December 13, 2013
New Line Cinema, Warner Bros. Pictures and MGM have announced the titles and release dates for filmmaker Peter Jackson’s two-film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s enduringly popular masterpiece The Hobbit. The first film, titled “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” will be released on December 14, 2012. The second film, titled “The Hobbit: There and Back Again,” is slated for release the following year, on December 13, 2013.
Both films are set in Middle-earth 60 years before Tolkien’s “The Lord of the Rings,” which Jackson and his filmmaking team brought to the big screen in the blockbuster trilogy that culminated with the Oscar®-winning “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.” The adventure of “The Hobbit” follows the journey of title character Bilbo Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the fearsome dragon Smaug.
Under Jackson’s direction, both movies are being shot consecutively in digital 3D using the latest camera and stereo technology. Filming is taking place at Stone Street Studios, Wellington, and on location around New Zealand.
Ian McKellen returns as Gandalf the Grey, the character he played in “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy, and Martin Freeman, who just won a BAFTA TV Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the BBC series “Sherlock,” takes on the central role of Bilbo Baggins. Also reprising their roles from “The Lord of the Rings” movies are: Cate Blanchett as Galadriel; Orlando Bloom as Legolas; Ian Holm as the elder Bilbo; Christopher Lee as Saruman; Hugo Weaving as Elrond; Elijah Wood as Frodo; and Andy Serkis as Gollum. The ensemble cast also includes (in alphabetical order) Richard Armitage, Jed Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Stephen Fry, Ryan Gage, Mark Hadlow, Peter Hambleton, Stephen Hunter, William Kircher, Sylvester McCoy, Bret McKenzie, Graham McTavish, Mike Mizrahi, James Nesbitt, Dean O’Gorman, Lee Pace, Mikael Persbrandt, Conan Stevens, Ken Stott, Jeffrey Thomas, and Aidan Turner.
The screenplays for “The Hobbit” films are by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Guillermo del Toro and Peter Jackson. Jackson is also producing the films, together with Fran Walsh and Carolynne Cunningham. The executive producers are Ken Kamins and Zane Weiner, with Philippa Boyens serving as co-producer.
“The Hobbit” films are productions of New Line Cinema and MGM, with New Line managing production. Warner Bros Pictures is handling worldwide theatrical distribution, with select international territories as well as all international television licensing being handled by MGM.
Hopefully Jackson will release another behind-the-scenes clip of what they are doing on the HOBBIT sets soon! More when I get it...

Very cool. I'm really looking forward to this project from Bryan Singer. JACK THE GIANT KILLER has a real opportunity here to capitalize on the "brand", yet be somewhat original at the same time. That all should point to success.
The photos are spy shots from the set!
Here's the official release:
Principal photography is underway in London on acclaimed filmmaker Bryan Singer’s 3D epic action adventure JACK THE GIANT KILLER, with Nicholas Hoult in the title role of Jack, for New Line Cinema and Legendary Pictures.
JACK THE GIANT KILLER tells the story of an ancient war that is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.
Hoult and Singer recently collaborated on the Singer-produced “X-Men: First Class,” for release later this year. JACK THE GIANT KILLER also stars Eleanor Tomlinson as Princess Isabelle; Stanley Tucci (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” “Julie & Julia”) as the deceitful Lord Roderick; Ian McShane (“Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides,” HBO’s “Deadwood”) as the besieged King Brahmwell; Bill Nighy (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”) as the giants’ leader General Fallon; and Ewan McGregor (“Star Wars,” “The Ghost Writer”) as palace guard Elmont.
Singer will direct from a screenplay by Darren Lemke and Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney, story by Darren Lemke & David Dobkin. The film will be produced by Neal Moritz, David Dobkin, Bryan Singer and Patrick McCormick.
The creative filmmaking team includes Singer’s longtime collaborators, director of photography Newton Thomas Sigel (“X-Men,” “Superman Returns”) and editor John Ottman (“X2,” “Superman Returns”). The production designer is Gavin Bocquet (“Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith”).
JACK THE GIANT KILLER is filming on location in and around London, and is scheduled for a summer 2012 release.
A New Line Cinema presentation, in association with Legendary Pictures, the film will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.
Bring it on!!

One of my top 100 films of all time is HIGHLANDER and it just so happens that the director of said masterpiece, Russell Mulcahy is set to release a rather interesting movie based on a very strange premise: A freak tsunami traps shoppers at a coastal Australian supermarket inside the building ... along with a pack of tiger sharks.
The official synopsis is here.
I would think that most would believe they are having a very bad day if they happened to be in a grocery store when it was being robbed. Or if they were in the path of a tsunami - that hits that very same store. Or if that tsunami had a pack of famished tiger sharks within it.
Sounds crazy enough to work! Here's the trailer...
What do you think? Personally, I think the more sharks in 3D the better... :-)
BAIT is set to release in September for Australia. Uncertain when it will hit American shores.

Hey Folks, Adam Loncar here. Activision finally announced the obvious - that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is coming! The product will be more than likely S3D because Bobby Kotick (Activision Blizzard CEO) stated that last year's Black Ops set the standard for key features in all future Call of Duty projects. Since 3D was a big selling point for Black Ops it makes sense to infer that MW3 and all other COD games will also be in stereo. We'll confirm that as soon as possible for you.
After the press release be sure to watch the clips below! The reveal trailer is first followed by the gameplay trailer...

Wow. I don't know about you, but this official poster from Relativity Media really hits me in an area of my mind that hasn't really been hit since JAWS or ORCA. The idea of being eaten alive and being CONSCIOUS while that is happening really bothers me.
So David R. Ellis' SHARK NIGHT 3D poster is a nightmare for me! Imagine this in S3D: Looking into the innards of an oncoming shark and knowing that you will wind up in there is terrifying to say the least. If this is shot correctly we will be in for quite a ride I think.
Here's the movie's synopsis:
"Arriving by boat at her family’s Louisiana lake island cabin, Sara (Sara Paxton) and her friends quickly strip down to their swimsuits for a weekend of fun in the sun. But when star football player Malik (Sinqua Walls) stumbles from the salt-water lake with his arm torn off, the party mood quickly evaporates. Assuming the injury was caused by a freak wake-boarding accident, the group realizes they have to get Malik to a hospital on the other side of the lake, and fast. But as they set out in a tiny speedboat, the college friends discover the lake has been stocked with hundreds of massive, flesh-eating sharks! As they face one grisly death after another, Sara and the others struggle desperately to fend off the sharks, get help and stay alive long enough to reach the safety of dry land."
Chris Carmack, Alyssa Diaz, Joel David Moore, Dustin Milligan and Katharine McPhee also star.
SHARK NIGHT 3D bites into the box office September 2. I'll be there!

This image is the first in a series of character banners from Warner Bros. for their upcoming final installment of the Harry Potter series DEATHLY HALLOW PT 2. The pole position pic goes to none other than Harry Potter himself.
I find the image very appealing as the background shows heavy destruction taking place and a very intense and mature Harry Potter looking up at something... or someone.
IT ALL ENDS. Perfect wording to market this beast of the box office franchise! Bring it on!!

Looks amazing!! With every new trailer it seems as though the bar is being lifted higher and higher for GREEN LANTERN. Now with Warner Bros. release of the theatrical trailer (it will pre-roll in 3D on some screens) we are seeing the meat and potatoes of the release - the Green Lantern Corps.
The trailer will better introduce neophytes to the background story of the comic book than previous efforts. Really, it is wonderfully done. Have a look:
What do you think??

Love this tandem talking bread and butter 3D!! No need to introduce this thing at all other than to say they are warming up audiences for TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON which was shot in native 3D with the Cameron-Pace Group Fusion 3D system. ENJOY!
Time to bring Nolan around now... :-)

We are hitting another milestone today as MarketSaw hits 2000 posts! And suitably we have an exciting announcement for the occasion: James Cameron, Fox and Paramount have set the date for the re-release of TITANIC in converted stereoscopic 3D, April 6, 2012.
For you history buffs, yes - that is the same date that the actual Titanic set sail for the first and only time.
Here are some quotes from the official press release:
"There's a whole generation that's never seen 'Titanic' as it was meant to be seen, on the bigscreen," said Cameron in a release announcing the 3D release date. "And this will be 'Titanic' as you've never seen it before, digitally remastered at 4K and painstakingly converted to 3D."
"Our 30-plus year relationship with Jim Cameron and Lightstorm has been enormously rewarding, from 'Aliens' to 'Avatar', and the global phenomenon of 'Titanic' remains one of the greatest sources of pride in our history," said Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen and CEOs, Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman.
"This new presentation of Paramount's top-grossing film is particularly special because 2012 is the 100th anniversary of our studio," said Brad Grey, chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. "Paramount has had the pleasure of introducing audiences to some of the all-time classics of cinema during that century of moviemaking and we cannot think of a better way to mark the occasion than with this re-release of 'Titanic'?"
So we finally get a release date for the much anticipated conversion and we should look forward to one heckuva good job on it. I can assure you that this conversion is being done RIGHT. And it is suiting to have such an announcement for our 2000th post as well!

I AM SURE that these issues are in their past and that the experience will be a massive improvement over what happened a few years ago. I am looking forward to stunning digital clarity on regulation sized IMAX screens. Nothing less will do. I'll ask and see if I can get some numbers for you.
The "Empire Extra" availability sounds right on the money! Can't wait to see it. There has been a movement to these added services in recent years with chains like the Alamo Drafthouse blazing trails (food & licensed beverage service to your seat). Perhaps we will see this in Canada at some point down the road as well. I'm just excited to have these improvements coming right now!!
Congratulations Empire Theatres!!

Hello. WOW! Check out Tintin's face at the end of this! Emotion expressed through character's faces WILL be front and center in this movie!!
I think we will be truly seeing the very first valid attempt to display humans with human like emotions through performance capture. AVATAR was obviously first off the mark with its Na'vi, but TINTIN looks to have taken a huge leap (and risk) to tackle humans. It seems they have done well! Stunning!!
So enough warm up! Check out the trailer:
What do you think?? :-)

Ahhh, finally! I just landed in Vancouver (Screen Gems has invited me on a set visit for UNDERWORLD 4 - YES - a native 3D production; more on this soon) and have discovered that two posters have been released for Steve Spielberg's (and Peter Jackson's) upcoming MEGA blockbuster, TINTIN!
I simply adore these quality posters. This is what the movies are all about! Intrigue. Adventure. And of course S3D and cutting edge movie technology!
The first image is courtesy of Empire, while the second comes to us via AICN. Both have Tintin and Snowy (the dog) superimposed on different backgrounds - both are amazing. You can start to get the feeling for the emotions that Tintin will display in the movies from his look here.
Apparently Empire is promising the first trailer for us tomorrow! This is the moment we have been waiting for for so long - Spielberg and Jackson's TINTIN in action. Can't believe the time has finally come. To think of seeing this and subsequent trailers in 3D pre-rolling in theaters during the coming months moistens the eye... :-)
...and have they axed "THE SECRET OF THE UNICORN" sub-line? Hmmm. Perhaps, seeing as this is the first of the series. Does this bode well for sequels if true? I think they will keep the sub-line in personally. We'll see!

EXCLUSIVE: Just heard from one of my top sources on AVATAR that James Cameron and Jon Landau visited the set of THE HOBBIT in Wellington, New Zealand this week!
They checked out Peter Jackson's use of his 3ality Digital 3D rigs for the RED Epic cameras - lots of action to see for them!!
Further and quite importantly, they booked studio floors for AVATAR 2 and 3! The time is fast approaching that the AVATAR sequels will start lensing and we, of course, ARE ON IT! Bring it on...

Hey guys - here's the new FRIGHT NIGHT trailer and poster from Dreamworks Pictures.
One the of the big things I am looking forward to in this movie is Anton Yelchin (STAR TREK). Obviously he has no accent in this film and his ability to carry scenes without Colin Farrell will be key, setting up the battles between them. Judging by the trailer, I think they are setting things up just about right - let's hope the polish and story is there too.
I really enjoyed the original with Chris Sarandon - quite inventive I thought for a vampire story in the 'burbs.
Here's the storyline:
Senior Charlie Brewster (Anton Yelchin) finally has it all going on: he's running with the popular crowd and dating the most coveted girl in his high school. In fact, he's so cool he’s even dissing his best friend. But trouble arrives when Jerry (Colin Farrell) moves in next door. He seems like a great guy at first, but there’s something not quite right—but everyone, including Charlie's mom (Toni Collette), doesn't notice. After observing some very strange activity, Charlie comes to an unmistakable conclusion: Jerry is a vampire preying on the neighborhood. Unable to convince anyone, Charlie has to find a way to get rid of the monster himself in this Craig Gillespie-helmed revamp of the comedy-horror classic.
Director: Craig Gillespie
Writer: Marti Noxon
Studio: DreamWorks Pictures
Cast: Anton Yelchin, Colin Farrell, Christopher Mintz-Plasse
Release: August 19, 2011

YES! Man I hope this is done right. When I was a kid a movie came out that changed the way I viewed movies, that is to say I stopped trusting them! Partially through THE AMITYVILLE HORROR I looked away for the first time ever and thought: "Time for a commercial break" so that I could relax a bit. It really scared me. Of course it didn't help that the whole theater was screaming at times either. The movie was one of a handful that influenced me, which also included KING KONG (Jessica Lange) and STAR WARS.
Fade to today and we have news from Hannibal Classics (via our friends at STYD) that yet another movie about the haunted house on 112 Ocean Avenue is set to be made. AMITYVILLE - THE LEGACY 3D starts lensing in September for an October 2012 release.
If you're keeping track - yes, this will be actually the SECOND movie in the franchise that is 3D. The first one was AMITYVILLE 3-D (1983) that was screened in old school polarized 3D (cardboard very dark lens glasses).
Here's the official storyline... **WARNING - THERE ARE SPOILERS INCLUDED:
Six priests enter an abandoned home in the middle of an intense thunderstorm. The leader of the group, FATHER MANFRED, quiets the doubting FATHER KIBBLER, the youngest priest. The priests separate and Kibbler follows the sound of laughter into the attic. Inside, flies swarm by the the iconic windows of the Amityville house. The door slams shut and an unseen demon claws at Kibbler. Manfred kicks open the door and battles the demon until it consumes him in fire. The attic erupts but the demon is vanquished -- contained in a weak, but still-alive Manfred.
Thirty years later, we meet NANCY and MICHAEL EVANS and their daughter AMANDA, a happy family recently touched by tragedy. Nancy's sister CAROLYN committed suicide, leaving Nancy and Michael to care for her kids, BRIAN and JESSICA. The Evans family is in the process of moving from the city to live in Carolyn's suburban home, where Nancy hopes to bond with Brian and Jessica. Michael plans to fix up the house, sell it, and move the family back to the city.
Before they settle into the home, the friction between Michael and Jessica threatens to splinter the family. Very soon after their arrival, Nancy begins to sense a palpable, evil presence. She can't seem to sleep through the night due to mysterious and horrifying noises. Their family cat is found in the attic -- dead. Slaughtered. Worse, as a family unit, they have a hard time meshing with Brian and Jessica. Michael becomes consumed with renovating the house, and hires a couple of hard-partying locals, ANT and SEAN, to help him. But they are afraid to go in the attic. They know what happened in there.
As Michael's passion turns to obsession, Nancy struggles with her very sanity. She's coming apart at the seams, unhinged by the evil presence that only she seems to feel. She knows it will stop at nothing to get them out of the house. When she finds some letters Carolyn wrote to Father Manfred and Father Kibbler she makes a startling discovery -- Carolyn went through the same thing. Unable to track down Manfred, she locates Kibbler -- but he offers her no help. He is no longer a priest, and only communicated with Carolyn because Manfred no longer could. She begs him to help her find Manfred, and Kibbler finally admits the truth: Manfred is in an insane asylum.
Nancy goes to see Father Manfred and convinces him to help her vanquish the evil spirit. Michael's erratic behavior intensifies as the hauntings escalate, culminating in a horrific attack on one of Jessica's friends and the mysterious disappearance of a local delivery man. And it soon becomes clear that Michael is building an exact replica of the Amityville house. Nancy finally convinces Kibbler and Father Manfred to put aside their bad blood and help her fight the evil spirit and cast it from the house.
But if they think the spirit will go quietly or that they even know the source of its strength, they have another thing coming. AMITYVILLE - THE LEGACY 3D reinvigorates a classic franchise with astonishing scares, dazzling set pieces, and twists that will leave audiences shocked and hungry for more.

In Final Destination 5, Death is just as omnipresent as ever, and is unleashed after one man's premonition saves a group of coworkers from a terrifying suspension bridge collapse. I think these movies give the Spike Channel's 1000 WAYS TO DIE a run for its money! Love the inventiveness. That bridge is fodder for quite a few demises I am sure...
You can follow all of our continuing FINAL DESTINATION 5 coverage right here.
Looks like Jason Momoa goes up against a lot of nasties in CONAN THE BARBARIAN! I really hope they keep the warrior angle. We need a true representation of a warrior as its been a long time coming. This is Lionsgate's latest official poster for the movie - so enjoy!
“I live. I love. I slay…I am content.”
- Conan The Barbarian
The most legendary Barbarian of all time is back this Summer. Having thrived and evolved for eight consecutive decades in the public imagination- in prose and graphics, on the big screen and small, in games and properties of all kinds- Conan’s exploits in the Hyborian Age now come alive like never before in a colossal 3D action-adventure film.
A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.
Deftly adapted from the original works of Robert E. Howard and faithful to the mythology and psychology of his iconic character, CONAN THE BARBARIAN stars Jason Momoa, Rachel Nichols, Stephen Lang, Rose McGowan, Saïd Taghmaoui and Ron Perlman. The film is directed by Marcus Nispel, and written by Thomas Dean Donnelly & Joshua Oppenheimer and Sean Hood.

There are no spoilers in this review, but you are free to discuss anything you wish about the movie in the comments section below.

THOR rivals IRON MAN and SPIDER-MAN for the best Marvel property production yet and handles 3D conversion with godlike prowess! NINE STARS.
Jumping off from THE GREEN HORNET which had amazing 3D conversion visuals as well (see that review here), THOR manages to improve upon that already highly set bar. The 3D was scaled back nicely so that we were no longer seeing actor's noses sticking out at the audience and there are absolutely no headaches whatsoever from viewing this movie. Very enjoyable.
Note that the up close narrative shots had barely any 3D effect at all - PERFECT!! THANK YOU. It allowed time for the audience to rest between the intense battle scenes and was a perfect balance.
However, there were issues. There are several scenes (not many mind you) that beckoned for deeper 3D (conversion company's fault mainly unless the studio pushed for a more flat look). Some scenes that could have been better shot with stereoscopic 3D in mind (like keeping the camera closer to the ground to accentuate depth (production's fault). Really though, this is nitpicking and the conversion was well done. Kudos to Stereo D for the excellent work! I want to see more of this effort on future conversions! And Kudos to Kenneth Branagh (Director) and Haris Zambarloukos (DP) for a tremendously well thought out and shot 3D conversion!!
I saw the CAPTAIN AMERICA trailer in 3D pre-rolling in front of THOR (sadly CONAN was in 2D here). CAPTAIN AMERICA looks like it too will enjoy a superlative conversion! Something I find strange though and I am not sure why others have not figured this out, but in the trailer Chris Evans is looking at a poster with his face's reflection in the glass - the poster contents -within itself- are shown with depth! This is a big no-no. There were no 3D posters for army recruitment back then! It should be a flat image. Either someone was lazy and hasn't gone over the conversion, or it was a bad call to include that in the scene list for conversion. I hope it is fixed for the actual movie's release - quite distracting for me.
Let's breakdown the aspects of my review:
Stereoscopic 3D (9 stars):
Perfect 3D for 94% of this movie!!! I cannot say this enough. Practically indistinguishable from native 3D in many scenes. Conversion has come a long way and THOR is the best of the best so far.
Story (8 stars):
I was disappointed in several areas, particularly Loki. I felt Loki's development was rich, but unexplained. Sure he is full of mischief, but he should still HAVE A PURPOSE in mind that the audience should grow to understand. I still don't know what he wants, even after the movie was over and have time to think about it. Worse, I wasn't motivated to think about it from the movie itself - I forced myself to consider what Loki really wants to achieve. So much opportunity with that character and I though much of it was lost.
Conversely I felt that Thor and Odin's characters developed nicely. I simply loved the scene where Thor enter's Odin's great hall with all the magnetism that he truly should have to the cheers of the audience (not a spoiler - its in the trailer). Then as the movie progresses Thor evolves quite satisfactorily indeed. Love it. Odin's character is slightly less achieved at the end, but still very enjoyable to watch.
Loved the comedic relief that was built into the story!! Hemsworth getting hit a second time by the truck and just turning his head in time to see it happening... PRICELESS.
Acting (9 stars):
Chris Hemsworth (Thor) was PERFECTLY cast. As was Anthony Hopkins (Odin) and Tom Hiddleston (Loki). Special mention goes to Rene Russo as Frigga because she has been conspicuously absent from Hollywood since 2005 and I missed seeing her in the movies. So glad she is back. Her feminine air of royalty was sorely needed in the movie and was perfectly delivered.
Hemsworth carries this movie with such ease. His personality shines through all the scenes and he is clearly destined to A list vehicles from now on. Think a mash up between Vin Diesel and Brad Pitt.
Hopkins delivered a very hard role in Odin - there would only be a handful of actors that could tackle it and pull it off, and in seemingly true Marvel casting fashion - the studio pulled it off too.
Hiddleston is a fresh enough face that audiences wouldn't quite know what to do with him as far as figuring out what Loki has designs on. Unfortunately much of Hiddleston's acting prowess was wasted on a development that in the end did not deliver the full goods.
Character Development (9 stars):
Exceptional. Diverse. Rich background stories that are typical of a tried and true comic book franchise. A beautiful thing to behold. As I have said earlier, THOR would have had higher marks if I could figure out Loki. At least let me know what his aspirations are - or why they change.
Suspension of Disbelief (10 stars):
Rounded up from 9.5 stars - not perfect but darn close. THOR manages to take audiences on a ride that in the end succeeds in letting us believe that the Norse Gods are alive and doing quite well in the modern world. NOT an easy task. Branagh pulls it off. Bloody nice job chap.
Directing (9 stars):
Again, suspension of disbelief carries a lot of weight for this rating too. Branagh has the chops to deliver (although has a knack for disappointing results sometimes) so I was looking forward to THOR a great deal just from the creative and delivery point of view alone. Branagh's ability to harvest masterful performances from his principals as well as tying in story and making sure we still BELIEVE in everything we see was Shakespeare in action.
Sound / Score (8 stars):
Unremarkable really. I don't remember much about this element at all which means it was nicely delivered but not exceptional. Certainly not poorly done either as I would have captured that.
Cinematography (9 stars):
Averaged up from 8.5 stars. Again, not much to remark about. The movie was solidly captured but some scenes needed to be thought out a bit more for stereoscopic 3D. Not much to complain about at all though. Much of the movie was CG so cinematography has a different impact there. Take Asgard for example.
Special Effects / Stunts (9 stars):
Nothing to complain about! I was invested in the movie from the opening scenes. Nicely done. I believe Digital Domain did the lions share of the work.
Continued work in 3D conversions is truly paying off folks. If the money is spent, the time is allotted and the right personnel are in place, you can almost count on a great conversion now. At least from Stereo D. We'll stay on this of course and keep you updated as to what new conversion technologies are brewing and how it is being delivered.
Are 3D conversions on par with native 3D yet? Too early to say. We need to have a constant stream of perfectly produced content first. And a gold standard 3D conversion company stand up and be counted. Is Stereo D the one? Perhaps! We shall see...
So what are you waiting for?? Go see this movie in the theater, in stereoscopic 3D - the way it is meant to be seen! The big screen is truly home for this movie. THOR flies high!!

Mr. 3D himself has decided to step into the role of a historical legend this time around as Brendan Fraser signs on for WILLIAM TELL: 3D.
Here's the official press release:
Producer Todd Moyer has announced that Brendan Fraser will take on the title role in the historical family action adventure WILLIAM TELL: 3D, to be shot this fall in Europe. Nick Hurran (The Prisoner and Doctor Who; UNDERTAKING BETTY; LITTLE BLACK BOOK) is slated to direct from a script by Scott Reynolds. Moyer expects principal photography to begin October 1st at Castel Studios in Romania and on location in Switzerland. Gary Hamilton will also produce under his Arclight banner, with Arclight handling international distribution of the film at Cannes.
Moyer says, “There is no other actor who is more perfectly suited to be the patriot and family man that is William Tell. Brendan was the driving force behind the movie being shot in 3D. He’s a witty, charming and very likeable action hero, and he really anchors the ensemble cast.” Moyer’s in negotiation to attach Anna Paquin (True Blood; JANE EYRE, X-MEN series) to the cast as well.
William Tell is a legend in North America for shooting an apple from the top of his son’s head with a bow and arrow (it was really a crossbow). What Americans don’t know is that he’s a revered historical figure in Europe.
In the legend, Tell just can’t leave well enough alone. The local potentate of the Hapsburg monarch, Hermann Gessler forces Tell to shoot the apple because he refused to bow before Gessler’s hat, erected in a town square. Tell succeeds in cleanly (and safely) cleaving the fruit and wins his and his son’s freedom. But Gessler asks Tell why he had two arrows is his quiver, and Tell replies he was going to shoot Gessler with the second if he’d missed. Tell’s defiance of Gessler ignited an uprising against the Austrian government which led to the formation of Switzerland. If confirmed, Paquin will play Zora, Tell’s wife and Schweiger will play Gessler.
Interesting. Fraser can be very appealing in some roles and concerned father is one of them. Should be good and I like that I haven't seen a William Tell movie before either (though some have been made). Here's hoping!

Very cool award! Congratulations Vince and James!! Emphasis below is mine...
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Recognizes CBS Sports and CAMERON – PACE Group with “The George Wensel Technical Achievement Award” for the 2010 US Open Tennis Championship in 3D
BURBANK, CA, May 6, 2011 – CAMERON – PACE Group announces it won a Sports Emmy Award with CBS Sports at the 32nd Annual Sports Emmy Awards held at Lincoln Center in New York City on Monday, May 2, 2011.
CAMERON – PACE Group (formerly PACE) was the innovative company responsible for designing and supplying six FUSION 3D camera systems including three 2D/3D integrated camera rigs, Shadow D powered with Shadow Vision system technology and the fully integrated, on-location live broadcast mobile unit, FUSION Mobile 1 Unit™ for CBS Sports’ 2010 US Open Tennis Championship. This live 3D sports broadcast marked the first time in history that the US Open Tennis Championship was captured in 3D and the first ever live 3D broadcast utilizing CAMERON – PACE Group’s 2D/3D integrated camera rig, Shadow D. Both companies were awarded under “The George Wensel Technical Achievement Award” category which recognizes technical innovation that is extraordinary and enhances the broadcast for the viewer for the US Open Tennis Championships - 3D at US Open Tennis Championships production.
“We are honored to be recognized with CBS Sports for the US Open Sports Emmy,” said Vince Pace, Co-Chairman and CEO of CAMERON - PACE Group. “The future of 3D sports hinges on the integration of critical camera positions. Utilizing the Shadow D System we were able to give the viewer a courtside seat without any additional operators, seat kills or camera positions; a win/win for all.”
With live 3D sports production continuing to rise, CAMERON - PACE Group saw the opportunity to revolutionize the 2D and 3D live sports production capture process with the design of an integrated 2D/3D camera rig, known as Shadow D and the development of the Shadow Vision system technology. The Shadow D rig stacks a 3D camera next to a longer 2D camera lens and allows one camera operator to control and drive both cameras with one set of controls, capturing 2D and 3D images simultaneously. This allows 2D camera operators to capture 3D without learning new production techniques, reduces 3D production costs and solves the conflict of 2D and 3D camera placement around a sports venue.
"It's great that our technology is being recognized," said James Cameron, Co-Chairman of CAMERON - PACE Group. "The Shadow D allows the use of shared camera positions and operators. It's all about creating a business model that works, that makes 3D cost effective for broadcasters."
CAMERON – PACE Group first unveiled the Shadow D rig at the 2010 NAB Show. Since then the Shadow D rig has been utilized for various live 3D sports productions including the CBS Sports’ 2011 Masters Golf Tournament, CBS Sports’ 2010 US Open Tennis Championship, ESPN’s 2010 ESPN Masters Golf Tournament, ESPN’s 2010 Summer X Games and HBO Sports’ 2010 Boxing. At this year’s NAB Show, Vince Pace and James Cameron showed a 3D clip from CBS Sports’ 2011 Masters Golf Tournament during their opening keynote speech in Las Vegas, Nevada.

LOS ANGELES, May 5, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Full-service production company, Digital Revolution Studios (DRS), announces Bullproof, an all-new original 3D series premiering tonight, May 5, on the elite 3D channel, 3net. Bullproof is the first episodic docu-reality or "Sportumentary" series to be shot entirely in native 3D. In four breathtaking one-hour installments, the season follows four American Bullfighters – the men once known as rodeo clowns -- as they risk their lives to protect the cowboys of the Championship Bullriding (CBR) Tour.
"DRS specializes in taking a good idea and making it great. Our partners, Wild Eyes, had been trying to sell this concept for years – with no takers. Combining their idea with our production company was a great decision. Our ability to bring it to life with great stories and stunning visuals made this show unique, immersive and stunning to watch," says Director, Craig Tanner, the co-founder of DRS and the Visual Effects Editor of the blockbuster, Avatar.
The proprietary post workflow used by Digital Revolution Studios included Final Cut Pro and other readily available finishing tools, with custom developed scripts to enhance the 3D workflow. "Meeting the highest quality standards on our budget was tough, but we made it happen. Obviously, hiring the correct writer was crucial, but we saved money in the post department as DRS used its in-house creative team, including in-house editors, graphic designers, VFX artists, and 3D editors - and it helped that our Director didn't charge us a penny," indicated, Wayan Palmieri, Sr. Stereoscopic Supervisor, and CTO of Digital Revolution Studios.
Says CEO of Digital Revolution Studios, Gina Light Tanner, "When we were asked to create the 'gold standard' of 3D on a 3D TV budget, we had to think outside the box. DRS engineered 4 different rigs for Bullproof and used easily replaceable Canon cameras, like the XF 305's. We designed these rigs with absolute simplicity in mind. Getting the shot the first time was crucial. Having rigs that wouldn't create more headaches in post was critical."
Digital Revolution Studios creates its own 2D and 3D content, as well as co-produces with partners. DRS is currently accepting unique and compelling feature and TV ideas in all genres for review. Contact DRS at ideas@drs3D.com to find out more information on submission of your idea for review.
Bullproof airs in the month of May on 3net. Electric Sky is distributing this and other DRS 2D and 3D productions internationally.
About Digital Revolution Studios:

Haven't seen the results on this program in 3D so I can't comment - but I love that more and more 3D content is getting made and distributed. I hope it is wildly successful!
